Speaking at Sony's mid-term strategy meeting yesterday in Japan, SCE president Kaz Hirai confirmed that Sony will roll out its video download service to the PlayStation Network on both PlayStation 3 and PSP this summer. The service will actually hit the US first, with Europe and Japan planned for later dates not yet announced. No other details were announced about the service during the conference.
Also of note, the presentation (which is available in full here) reveals that more than 9.8 PlayStation Network registrants have signed up worldwide for the service, with Sony having moved over 170 million downloads and more than 86 petabytes of data (roughly equivalent to 17 million single-layer DVDs) during that time.
Hirai also announced the company's new "Life with PlayStation" initiative, and showed it to the audience in attendance. Basically, the Life application will combine the Wii's Weather and News channels, allowing users to pull current news and weather for locations across the world using a globe interface. The service will also feature customizable background music.
