Sony announces they EyeToy's successor in Japan and Europe.
With games such as Eye of Judgment and Singstar headed to Sony’s next-gen console, it was only a matter of time before the company announced a PlayStation 3 version of the EyeToy, and we now have that announcement. Sony today revealed their plans for a summer relaunch of the newly re-branded PlayStation Eye. Of course, this isn’t just a repackaged version of the same camera we saw last generation, and the PlayStation Eye has several improvements over the original EyeToy.
The camera can now be adjusted, zooming in on just your head and shoulders, or pulling out to include more of your body (making it more practical for some of the classic EyeToy mini-games), and allows for 120 frames per second in 320x240 resolution (60 fps at 640x480). Also, the PlayStation Eye includes a microphone array that allows you to chat (or perhaps even sing) without the need to hold a microphone or wear a headset, making it the perfect accessory for the new Singstar and perhaps even PlayStation Home. And finally, in Japan anyway, the PlayStation Eye comes bundled with Eye of Judgment, a camera based card game. We're hopeful that a similar bundle will be offered in North America, but there's no confirmation of that at this time. No price has been announced, but more information about the PlayStation Eye can be found in the press release below:
